Making sure the UC system works for you

If you have a health condition, then the UC system can be difficult to navigate.

Thing to consider

We have listed below some things that you might like to consider.

Alternative Payment Arrangements

UC is usually paid monthly, however you can ask to be made more regularly.

And if you have rent to pay, some of your payment can be made directly to your landlord.

Claimant Commitment

It’s very important to make sure that your claimant commitment doesn’t include tasks that you will struggle to do.
If it does, and you fail to do them, then you risk being sanctioned.

Offline claim

If you have an online claim but are finding this difficult to manage and it would be easier for you to contact the DWP by phone or text then you can ask for an offline claim.

Support Needs

You can report your support needs online (or by telephoning the UC helpline).
These should be recorded on the system so that everyone at the DWP is aware of your support needs.

Reasonable Adjustments

Some claimants can request ‘reasonable adjustments’ be made to accommodate their disability, such as allowing more time to respond to messages, or only calling you in the afternoon.

Limited Capability for Work

If you have a health condition that means you are unable to work or limits the work or hours you are able to do, then you may have a Limited Capability for Work.
