This will be paid directly into the account you chose when you made your claim. This could be your bank, building society or credit union account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-e8f208e3\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns has-1-columns has-desktop-equal-layout has-tablet-equal-layout has-mobile-collapsedRows-layout has-vertical-unset\"><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-overlay\"><\/div><div class=\"innerblocks-wrap\">\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column-9694f3bb\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Universal Credit is paid monthly and is paid in arrears &#8211; the date you receive payments is based on the date you made your claim. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you make a new claim for UC you will have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A calendar month before your entitlement is assessed, then<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Up to 7 days before your payment is processed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/iStock-597277178-edited-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15586\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/iStock-597277178-edited-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/iStock-597277178-edited-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/iStock-597277178-edited-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/iStock-597277178-edited-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/iStock-597277178-edited-2048x1153.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-61f4c825\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns has-1-columns has-desktop-equal-layout has-tablet-equal-layout has-mobile-equal-layout has-vertical-unset\"><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-overlay\"><\/div><div class=\"innerblocks-wrap\">\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column-82569051\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column\">\n<p>You can ask for an Advance Payment of Universal Credit if you don&#8217;t think you&#8217;ll have enough money to live on while you wait for your first payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/universal-credit-home-page\/claims-and-payments\/can-i-get-an-advance-payment\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"523\"><em>Advance Payment<\/em> <\/a>  page for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#cde6e3\"><strong>Example: <\/strong><br>Mumtaz makes his claim for Universal Credit on 16th June. He completes all the steps to make a successful claim. Therefore his Assessments Periods are set as starting on 16th of every month, and ending on 15th of every month. This sets his payment date as 22nd of every month. <br>So the DWP assess his first Universal Credit award on 15th July and work out how much he is due to be paid for that Assessment Period i.e. for the period 16th June to 15th July, his bank account is credited with this on 22nd July.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide is-style-wide--1\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-6562963b\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-6562963b has-light-bg\">On-going Payment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll then be paid calendar monthly, usually on the same date each month. But if that date falls at the weekend or on a bank holiday then you will be paid on the last working day before this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">You\u2019ll be able to view your payment details in your online Universal Credit account.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#cde6e3\"><strong>Example: <\/strong><br>Mumtaz&#8217;s Universal Credit award will be assessed on the last day of his Assessment Period, being the 15th of every month and a payment issued.<br>This payment will be credited to his bank account on 22nd of each month &#8211; unless that is a Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holiday &#8211; when it will be credited on the first working day before this.<br>So if 22nd August is a Sunday, his bank account would be credited with his UC award on Friday 20th August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#cde6e3\"><strong>TIP: <\/strong>If your Universal Credit is due to increase because you have lost your job or other change in your circumstances and you are going to struggle until you receive your next Universal Credit payment, you can apply for a Changes in Circumstance Advance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide is-style-wide--2\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-14fe81ed\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-14fe81ed has-light-bg\">Budgeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-da381ef1\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns has-1-columns has-desktop-equal-layout has-tablet-equal-layout has-mobile-collapsedRows-layout has-vertical-unset\"><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-overlay\"><\/div><div class=\"innerblocks-wrap\">\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column-ef80920d\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column\">\n<p>If you\u2019re used to working out your budget weekly or fortnightly, you\u2019ll need to think about how you\u2019ll manage your money for a whole month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may need to change the date you pay certain bills \u2013 let the billing company know what you are doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think you will find it difficult to manage your money monthly, then talk to your Work Coach about the system of Alternative Payment Arrangements. They can allow some claimants to receive their Universal Credit payments twice monthly*.<br>See Alternative Payment Arrangements below for more information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#cde6e3\"><strong>Example:<\/strong><br>Anita is making a claim for Universal Credit after separating from her partner. She has poor numeracy skills and does not think she will be able to manage working out a monthly budget.<br>She explains this to her Work Coach who agrees to a Alternative Payment Arrangement of her Universal Credit being paid to her in smaller amounts &#8211; twice monthly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* If you are claiming Universal Credit in Scotland, then there is a different system called Scottish choices. This means you can choose to have your Universal Credit award paid to you twice a month and for an amount of your Universal Credit to be paid direct to your landlord and you will be offered these options when you first make your claim or you can opt in at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 25px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide is-style-wide--3\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paying your rent <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-1b4b9eb8\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns has-2-columns has-desktop-equal-layout has-tablet-equal-layout has-mobile-collapsedRows-layout has-vertical-unset\"><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-overlay\"><\/div><div class=\"innerblocks-wrap\">\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column-d17f0e69\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column\">\n<p>It is your responsibility to make sure your rent is paid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you prioritise your rent otherwise you could risk losing your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are in debt, have rent arrears or will struggle to pay your rent, you or your landlord can ask for an amount up to the value of your Housing Costs Element to be paid direct to them under the Alternative Payment Arrangements scheme \u2013 it\u2019s called a \u2018managed payment\u2019*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See Alternative Payment Arrangements below for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column-ca8fff05\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"910\" src=\"https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Help-with-rent-1024x910.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1861\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.1253027367401307;object-fit:cover;width:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Help-with-rent-1024x910.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Help-with-rent-300x267.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Help-with-rent-768x682.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Help-with-rent.jpg 1470w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#cde6e3\"><strong>Example:<\/strong><br>Faith is moving out from her parent&#8217;s house and into a one bedroom flat. She&#8217;s been getting Universal Credit since leaving college last year.<br>As long as she notifies the DWP of her change in circumstances and provides information about her landlord and her rent, then her Universal Credit award will increase as a Housing Costs Element will be included.<br>Faith&#8217;s monthly rent is \u00a3600, but her Universal Credit only increases by \u00a3560 after the Housing Costs Element is added. Faith is responsible for making sure the full \u00a3600 is paid to her landlord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* If you are claiming Universal Credit in Scotland, then there is a different system called Scottish choices. This is known as a split payment. Contact a Benefits Adviser or talk to your Work Coach to find out more.<br>See Alternative Payment Arrangements below for more information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 25px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide is-style-wide--5\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-fc96c8a2\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-fc96c8a2 has-light-bg\">Alternative Payment Arrangements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Universal Credit is usually paid as a single lump sum, into the account of your choice on a monthly basis, however the following Alternative Payment Arrangements are available:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"709\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Alternative-Payment-Arrangements-v2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Alternative-Payment-Arrangements-v2.jpg 709w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Alternative-Payment-Arrangements-v2-300x175.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>You might be able to get an Alternative Payment Arrangement if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are in debt or have rent arrears.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a disability \u2013 including a mental health condition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are homeless, have been previously homeless or are at risk of losing your home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have experienced domestic violence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a learning difficulty, like problems with reading or writing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are in temporary or supported accommodation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are 16 or 17 or leaving care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have an addiction to drugs, alcohol or gambling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling to get by for other reasons, your application will still be considered \u2013 contact a Benefits Adviser for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re making a new claim for Universal Credit, you should ask for the arrangement you want at your interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re already getting Universal Credit, you can make the request on your journal \u2013 send your Work Coach a message, or by calling the Universal Credit Helpline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> Alternative Payment Arrangements are kept under review to make sure they are providing the right support. The purpose of that review is to decide if an Alternative Payment Arrangement is still the best approach for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#cde6e3\"><strong>Example<\/strong>:<br>Julie, 19, has difficulties with reading and writing and with numbers. She finds it hard to manage money and is worried about getting her Universal Credit paid all in one payment at the end of her Assessment Period. Her Work Coach agrees that she can have her Universal Credit paid twice a month, which she finds easier to manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#cde6e3\"><strong>Example<\/strong>:<br>Natasha\u2019s partner Charlie is very controlling and won\u2019t let her access any of their money. They are getting into difficulties because he gambles and there isn\u2019t always enough money from his wages or their Universal Credit \u2013 which goes into his bank account \u2013 to pay the rent. She asks her Work Coach if any of the Universal Credit can be paid to her instead \u2013 they agree to split the payment so that Charlie only gets the single rate Standard Allowance, an amount for their rent is sent to their landlord \u2013 all the rest goes into Natasha\u2019s bank account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 25px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-black-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-black-background-color has-background is-style-wide is-style-wide--6\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-00d5babe\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-00d5babe has-light-bg\">If you think your payment is wrong<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-54e802df\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns has-2-columns has-desktop-twoOne-layout has-tablet-equal-layout has-mobile-collapsedRows-layout has-vertical-unset\"><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-overlay\"><\/div><div class=\"innerblocks-wrap\">\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column-ee061a45\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column\">\n<p>If you think your payment is wrong, you should call the UC helpline or ask for an explanation using your online account if you have one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should do this if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your payment is less than you expected and you haven&#8217;t been told why.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You think there&#8217;s been a mistake with how your Universal Credit has been worked out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column-953d1e9d\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\" style=\"margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Money-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1478\" style=\"width:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Money-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Money-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Money-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Money-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ucpages.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Money-2048x1367.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are still not happy after receiving an explanation then, you can request a &#8216;Mandatory Reconsideration&#8217;. Do this on your UC journal &#8211; use the words &#8216;I am requesting a Mandatory Reconsideration&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provide any evidence you have, this could be, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your tenancy agreement &#8211; if you think your housing costs are wrong.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Payslips or bank statements &#8211; if there&#8217;s been an error in your earnings (ask your employer for payslips if you don&#8217;t have them).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Childcare bills &#8211; if you think your childcare costs are wrong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#006666\"><strong>IMPORTANT:<\/strong> You\u2019ll get a monthly statement that tells you how much Universal Credit you\u2019re going to get.
