If you pay rent or certain service charges
If you and/or your partner are responsible for paying rent (including some service charges) for the home you live in, your Universal Credit award may include help towards the cost – called a Housing Costs Element.
If you receive help towards housing costs, it will be paid as part of your Universal Credit payment. It is your responsibility to make sure you pay your rent and other housing costs to your landlord in full.
If you have a mortgage or home loan, you might be able to get a loan to help pay your interest – this is separate from Universal Credit.
See Help with your rent to find out more about the Housing Costs Element.
NOTE: There are special rules for people who live in certain types of supported housing or temporary housing who may be able to claim Housing Benefit.
NOTE: You may be entitled to one or more of the other Elements.
See Maximum UC for more information.
