If you can claim, follow the steps outlined below.
Making a claim can take up to 30 minutes if you are making a single claim, and up to an hour for a couple claim.
What if I can’t get online?
If you don’t have access to a computer linked to the internet at home, then contact us to find out where you can go online.
There are a number of places where you can use a computer for free or access free Wi Fi to make your online claim, such as libraries and Jobcentre Plus offices.

But note that in some places where you can use a computer there might not be anyone available to help you with the claim.
Make sure you don’t miss out
- In very limited cases DWP will allow up to one month of backdating on a new Universal Credit claim after you submit it. Otherwise, you can only receive an award of Universal Credit from the date you click the ‘submit claim’ button.
- If you are claiming as a couple, then both of you will need to claim online and your award will start from the date both of you have clicked the ‘submit claim’ button.

- If you are unable to make a claim online, contact the UC Helpline (0800 328 5644) and ask for help.
IMPORTANT: Universal Credit does not include help with your Council Tax bill. You must make a separate claim for Council Tax Support from your local council. There should be more details about this on your Council Tax bill. Some local councils may take information from your Universal Credit claim in order to process a claim for Council Tax Support on your behalf, but you can not always rely on this.
Follow the steps below to make sure your claim is properly made and you get your first payment as quickly as possible
You’ll be asked a series of questions to help the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) work out if you’re eligible for Universal Credit and how much you could get. The claim is not complete until you have verified your identity, had a New Claim Interview, and agreed your claimant commitment.
If you are claiming as a couple, then you both have to complete all these steps separately and ensure your claims are joined with a partner code.
